What is Jokgu?

Jokgu (족구) is a popular Korean sport that combines elements of soccer and volleyball. It is played with a small ball and involves kicking and heading the ball over a net.

Jokgu Rules

Game setup

  • Teams: Each team typically has 4 players on the court at a time

  • Court Dimensions: The court is 15 meters long and 6.5 meters wide, similar to a badminton court

  • Net Height:

    • For men: 1.1 meters

  • Ball: A light, inflated ball slightly smaller than a soccer ball

Objective

  • Teams aim to score points by landing the ball in the opponent’s court or forcing the opponents to make a mistake

Scoring

  • A match is usually played in sets (best of 3 or 5 sets), with each set going to 15 points (or 21, depending on the tournament rules)

  • A team must win a set by at least 2 points

  • Headers are allowed

  • Players are not allowed to use their hands or arms

  • Each team is allowed up to 3 touches per possession before sending the ball over the net

  • A single player cannot touch the ball twice consecutively (except during blocking)

rally rules

  • The ball must clear the net and land within the opponent’s court during a rally

  • If the ball touches the ground on a team’s side or goes out of bounds, the opposing team scores a point
